A CAMPAIGN TO FUND VELOCITY’S NEW HOME
VELOCITY FOREVER is a 3 year campaign to fund the relocation, build out, and equipment upgrades necessary for Velocity’s new facility at 1621 12th Avenue. Though the organization successfully moved in March 2010, the capital campaign will continue in order to complete the building’s transformation into a center for training, performance, and community gathering.
Why the Move? Since 1996, Velocity Dance Center has been a hub for Seattle’s contemporary dance community. When the 2007 sale of the Odd Fellows Building and a subsequent 300 percent rent increase forced the organization into homelessness, the future of Velocity—and other resident arts groups—appeared bleak. But Velocity responded with a spirited quest for a new home that would serve the community for years to come. To date, the Velocity Forever Campaign has raised $420,000—more than 50 percent of its goal.
Velocity is now located at 1621 12th Avenue, in the space formerly occupied by Capitol Hill Arts Center, just three blocks from the Odd Fellows Building.
