BRIDGE PROJECT 2022

January 27 – 30, 2022 | 8 PM @ Base

The Bridge Project, part of Velocity’s Residency Programs, is a 4-week residency and performance program for movement-based artists new to making work, or who have been making work in the greater Seattle area for three years or less. This program offers three choreographers up to 40 hours of rehearsal space each to create a new short work with a cast of up to three local auditioned dancers. Velocity provides each choreographer with a choreography stipend, performer stipends, costume stipend, and the creative, financial and administrative support of a fully-produced weekend of performances at Base.

The Bridge Project 2022 is presented by Velocity in partnership with Base. Support for this year’s program comes from the Washington State Arts Commission and our awesome community of individual donors.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

ELISE BEERS AACHIX̂QAĞADUUG

Darkness dominates the day through winter seasons in the Aleutian Islands. Occasionally the northern lights make a visit on clear nights, revealing our ancestors. This glimpse of hope and beauty can only be experience in the midst of darkness. Light cast down from the stars and dancing color through the sky is what inspires Aachix̂Qağaduug’s dance. As a community, indigenous peoples have struggled to still be. Through understanding, we have a glimpse of hope. The hope to grow and re-establish pride; This spreads the light within dark times. Aachix̂Qağaduug’s dance will explore nature’s celestial integration and movement forms.

ASHLEY MENESTRINA

The origins of female-identifying people have constantly been on an evolutionary trajectory of claiming space. Inspired by artwork from Julie Mehretu, this project aims to explore the complexities behind untangling the undeniable presence of women. The formation of personal and collective identity is hindered by not being able to walk alone at night, believe survivors of sexual abuse, have full autonomy over our bodies, receive the same pay as men, or exist without extreme body image expectations. Women hold an unfathomable amount of power. As each woman learns of her/their own strength, we rise.

STASIA COUP (ARTIE THOMAS)

Stasia and friends embark on a colorful quest to discover the contents of a toy box. Imagination and stupidity reign. This work is part of the real-life artist’s efforts to heal from depression and anxiety by allowing his inner child to reign supreme. His unconventional drag seeks to celebrate queer inventiveness, contagious joy, and the magical, leavening power of play.
