Want to work with Velocity? We are a small team of artists and administrators working together in service of Velocity’s mission to advance contemporary dance through the creative explorations of artists and audiences. For almost 30 years Velocity has been artist led and run, and we value artist leadership and providing opportunities for artists to learn the administrative skills that they need to work with and within arts institutions like Velocity.
CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES: SFD+I WORK TRADE
About the Work Trade Program
Velocity’s Work Trade program provides the opportunity for participants to receive Velocity Work Trade Credits that can be used as “currency” for Velocity classes and shows at SFD+I and throughout the year in exchange for admin + operational tasks. Each Work Trade position has pre-allocated hours that are all mandatory for the position (outside of emergencies and sickness). For every hour that the Work Trade works they will receive 25 Velocity Work Trade Credits. One Velocity Work Trade Credit is worth $1.
Applications will be assessed based on the applicant’s experience and their interest in the position and Velocity’s programming as expressed in their cover letter.
Work Trade participants can trade to participate in:
ULTIMATE SFD+I: July 13 – Aug 10
PERFORMANCE Cohorts: July 13 – Aug 2
RESEARCH Week: Aug 3 – 10
–as well as other shows and workshops throughout Velocity’s Season
Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis. Applications will close February 1, 2025
About the Application
The application will ask for your basic information, and will ask you to indicate which Work Trade positions you are interested in.
On the second page of the application we will ask for the following:
- Cover Letter – Introduce yourself to Velocity! Who are you? What are your interests? Why do you want to participate in Work Trade? Do you have any experience or skills that you would like to share that are related to the positions you are applying to?
- What parts of Velocity’s programming would you like to participate in? Are there any faculty you desire to train with our shows in our season you would like to see?

PERFORMANCE COHORTS
Morning Operations Assistant
Description:
Performance Cohorts Morning Operations Work Trade will arrive at 12th Ave Arts prior to the morning classes. They will be responsible for mopping both the Mainstage and Studio floors, turning on lights and sound in the theater spaces, and setting up the Front Desk in the lobby. 1 position available. Great for anyone who would like to participate in any performance cohort or take dropins.

Mid-Day Front Desk Assistant
Description:
Performance Cohort Mid-Day Front Desk Work Trade will arrive at 12th Ave Arts prior to evening class and stay through its duration. They will be present at the Front Desk to check participants in and stay until class is over – this is especially helpful as many of our evening participants are unable to show up right on time after commuting from work. They may also need to take payment for any walk-ins. This person will also be responsible for restocking bathroom supplies (i.e. toilet paper, paper towels, and soap dispensers), collecting trash from the bathrooms and the Green Room, and taking it out to the dumpster. 1 position available. Great for anyone interested in participating in the Professional Cohort.

Evening Operations Assistant
Description:
Performance Cohort Evening Operations Work Trade will arrive at 12th Ave Arts just before the evening rehearsals are done. They will turn off sound and lights in the theater spaces and take down the Front Desk. Most importantly, they will ensure that both theater spaces are locked up at the end of the night. 1 position available. Could work great for anyone looking to participate in the Beginner or Intermediate Cohort

Showcase Box Office Assistant/Bartender
Description:
Performance Cohort Showcase Box Office Work Trade will assist Operations Manager with Box Office duties, including checking audience members in, giving them details about the show, and stamping their wrists. Bar Work Work Trade will sell concessions (beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, snacks) before the show and during intermission. Bar Work position(s) must have relevant MAST permit. After the shows, these positions will also assist with cleaning up the performance and audience spaces. 5 positions available.

Assistant Stage Manager
Description:
Performance Cohort Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) Work Trade will assist the Stage Manager with the Performance Cohorts Showcase. ASM will assist with Tech Rehearsals for each Cohort, supporting the needs of the Stage Manager, the choreographers, and the dancers. This can include but is not limited to fetching equipment, changing gels for lights, focusing lights, spiking the floor, and assembling/dismantling set design. ASM will assist the Performances by primarily being backstage support for the Cohorts, which can include but is not limited to readying performers for their call times and supporting performers with costume as needed. 1 position available. Great for anyone to take drop ins during the festival.

Description:

They will be responsible for checking participants into their class and possibly taking payment for any walk-ins. They will also be available for the duration of the evening class to answer any questions or assist students as needed. Lastly, they will sweep the dance space, make sure the space is locked as they leave, and return the binder and iPad to the designated spot at 12th Ave Arts. 1 position available. This is great for someone who would like to take an A la Carte Intensive and drop ins during Research Week.

Lastly, they will make sure both theater spaces are locked at the end of the night. 1 position available. This is great for someone who would like to take any part of Research Week.

Duties can include but are not limited to steaming costumes, setting up snacks, fetching equipment, working with lights, spiking the floor, and assembling/dismantling set design. 1 position available. This is great for someone who would like to take an A la Carte Intensive and drop ins during Research Week.
