OUT THERE is an experimental dance festival featuring West Coast dance artists who fearlessly push boundaries by making their wildest ideas happen on stage. These artists are here to f*ck shit up, and show us what is OUT THERE.
OUT THERE artists carry things across time, bodies, and the distance between people. In Week I, kelly langeslay and Allie Hankins bring a sensibility for language and the objects that hold it, tracing how history and memory move through bodies in relationship to the grief and love of time.

so the curtain goes out& it’s all right there, just like you’ve always dreamed. there won’t be a curtain, it’s not that kind of show. the wasps are piling up on the windowsills now—six in the kitchen& two in the bathroom. exoskeletons in varying states of decay. if they would just agree to split the rent i wouldn’t have to work so much& i could decay too. curtain goes out& the world zooms in till it’s just us. you don’t dream anymore but it’s okay cause theater isn’t real& besides i told you last time we’re both unreliable narrators& there’s no curtain anyway.
ALLIE HANKINS | BY MY OWN HAND, PART 5: INVISIBLE TOUCH
By My Own Hand, Part 5: INVISIBLE TOUCH is the final chapter of choreographer Allie Hankins’ eight-year performance series, an ongoing investigation into the slippery systems we use to define ourselves. Astrology, self-portraiture, dream interpretation, autobiography: each offers a framework for making meaning out of the unruly material of being a person. Across four interconnected solo works, Hankins has interrogated, impersonated, recorded, and occasionally attempted to exorcise various versions of herself. In INVISIBLE TOUCH, Hankins steps out of the performing role, handing the material to an ensemble of longtime collaborators. Haunting, tender, and wildly collaborative, INVISIBLE TOUCH unfolds as a shifting field of entanglement and transformation.
Featuring Linda Austin, claire barrera, keyon gaskin, Takahiro Yamamoto, and Lu Yim, INVISIBLE TOUCH reanimates movement, text, sound, and imagery from Parts 1–4 through five distinct physical languages and creative perspectives. The piece sets the loops, fragments, and gestures that have circulated through the series in motion through other bodies, where they are re-membered, resurrected, and rearticulated. In this closing iteration, authorship and finality become prismatic propositions: misrememberings illuminating new materiality; interpretations refracting into impersonations. My face, upon my face, upon my face. My face as your face. Facing it.

ALLIE HANKINS
Allie Hankins is a dancer, choreographer, sound artist and facilitator who has been producing and performing experimental works in Portland since 2013. Her work centers on deconstruction and the destabilization of persona through uncanny physicality, labyrinthine logic, and a razor sharp wit. She has self-produced nine original works and toured her productions to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Berlin, Minneapolis, Albuquerque, and Cork. In the Pacific Northwest, her works have been commissioned by Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and On the Boards in Seattle. Allie’s interdisciplinary practice has led to her professional engagements with choreographers Heather Kravas (SEA) Milka Djordjevich (LA), Morgan Thorson (Minneapolis), Julien Previeux (Paris), and Ruairi Donovan (Cork); and Portland artists Linda Austin, Takahiro Yamamoto, keyon gaskin, Tahni Holt, Danielle Ross, claire barrera, and Emma Lutz-Higgins. Allie has performed with these artists at esteemed venues such as New York Live Arts, Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, DiverseWorks in Houston, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. In 2013, she co-initiated the ongoing Queer performance cooperative Physical Education (PE) with keyon gaskin, Takahiro Yamamoto, and Lu Yim. PE produces festivals, hosts reading groups, and teaches workshops nationally, promoting accessibility and critical engagement with performance in Portland and beyond. Allie is a co-steward of FLOCK Dance Center, where she serves as a key facilitator of Portland’s experimental dance community through residency and public engagement programs. Her avant-sound trio LTD Time with Shao Way Wu and John Niekrasz performs at raves, record stores, and galleries. Allie has been awarded residencies at Centrum, Ucross, Headlands Center for the Arts, Caldera, Djerassi Resident Artist Program, and the Robert Rauschenberg Residency. Her work has been funded by The Regional Arts & Culture Council, the Oregon Arts Commission, the National Performance Network, the Oregon Community Foundation, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. She is a recipient of the 2024 Miller Foundation’s Spark Award for Oregon Artists in Performance.
