MILVIA PACHECO SALVATIERRA + NAOMI MACALALAD BRAGIN | GRIEF RITUAL

Grief Ritual is an improvisation-based performance collaboration between Milvia Pacheco Salvatierra and Naomi Macalalad Bragin, who explore the multiple dimensions of loss attached to their embodied experiences of migration as first and second generation immigrant women living in the United States. If migration begins with a departure, then how do we choose what we carry with us and what we leave behind? What ritual practices help us bring our grief out of hiding and our tears to a communal altar, to be seen and felt in public? In the wake of violent loss, stemming from connected histories of colonial encounter in Venezuela and the Philippines, we are interested in the ways that grief work allows us to reimagine our living relationships with land, language, and lineage. We move across mediums of dance, music, poetry and visual art, to retell hidden histories of cultural encounter, conversion and translation, and the queer possibilities of remaking ancestry. We uncover the beauty of ordinary grief, tending to what remains in the everyday process of holding on and letting go.

EMMY SMITH-STEWART + JEFFREY AZEVEDO | EMMY IN HER TUB

Emmy in her tub is a dance meeting lyrical essay composed and choreographed in her bath tub infused with magnesium chloride between 1–3am under red light. The performance adapts the stories of artist Greer Lankton hosting friends while bathing in her tub into a performance score, inviting the audience into Emmy’s nightly bath time ritual. This work continues Emmy and Jeffrey’s exploration of trance, chronic illness as a site of choreographic potential (ie a duet with post TBI myoclonus), self-absorption (to absorb through the skin and to be absorbable into water) as a practice of communal possibility, and creating an embodied relationship to all but severed transfeminine lineages through research and intergenerational friendship. Drawing from the work of artist and organizer Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, artist Greer Lankton and the ritual practices of cult of Cybelle, Emmy enters the bath to float through the liminal spaces of containment and dissolution, and deficiency (mineral, spiritual, retentional) and alterity.
