WHAT IS OUT THERE?

WHAT IS OUT THERE?

Dance…. the final frontier

OUT THERE is an experimental dance festival featuring West Coast dance artists who fearlessly push boundaries by making their wildest ideas happen on stage. These artists are here to f*ck shit up, and show us what is OUT THERE.

OUT WHERE? Not OVER there. HERE! OUT HERE! On the West Coast, where experimentalism has always been a primary making material of the artists who live here, pushing our region towards a more connected, sassier, imaginative, expansive, expressive, engaging, intuitive, sweaty, and collaborative future!

No limitations, the possibilities are boundless! *trumpets blare*

Come watch these choreographers’ new dance works over two weeks– two different weekends and two different lineups made just for you!

Quickly! Look to the skies and summon the mothership! You’ll be absolutely wrecked (in a fun way) by the energy of West Coast Dance with shows, music, and great drinks. Get your tickets today so that you can say… “Those dance shows were f*cking OUT THERE!”

TUES . SEP 29

9:30 AM CLASS: AKOIYA HARRIS AT KERRY HALL

SEP 29 9:30-11:30am Kerry Hall | Horton and hollerin’ INT/PRO | REGISTER

Horton is a technique that brings out strength, focus, and power of a dancer. In class, we find ways to approach this rigorous technique with ease and joy. Through a warm up center, movement across the floor, and a combination we will prioritize tending to the needs of our bodies in the moment. Interspersed within the class, we’ll talk about the history of the technique and its relevance today. We will use the sharpness of Horton to push ourselves while respecting our limits.

TUES. OCT 6

9:30 AM CLASS: Vlada Kremenović AT KERRY HALL

OCT 6 9:30-11:30AM Kerry Hall | Fluid Dynamics OPEN LEVEL | REGISTER

In this improvisational dance workshop, we will dive into the evolving relationships between body, forms, imagery and time through guided movement scores and collective experimentation.

We will begin with a warm-up that journeys from the floor to standing, drawing inspiration from biological and geological processes. Through a series of compositional exercises, we’ll deepen our connection to each other, time, and space while making room for curiosity, play, and meaning-making. The workshop will culminate in a group exploration of a score from my upcoming performance, MEDUSA, inspired by the jellyfish life cycle.
Open to everyone interested in movement and physical exploration, no prior dance experience is necessary.

FRI. OCT 9

9:30 AM CLASS: JESSE ZARITT AT KERRY HALL

OCT 9 | 9:30-11:30am Kerry Hall | Studio Practice | REGISTER

Class will begin with guided improvisational practices that examine relationships between curiosity, desire, strength, organizations of effort/force and ideology/aesthetics: practices of critical physicality!

Class materials shared are influenced by the work of Sara Shelton Mann, Shen Wei, Netta Yerushalmy, Arawana Hayashi, Deborah Hay and Faye Driscoll.

Critical to the class is an encounter with choreographed material. Alongside the challenge of learning and analyzing a predetermined sequence of movements, the practice of engaging set phrase material has broader implications: Can we approach the constraint of a choreographed passage as researchers – examining and questioning the physical and aesthetic forces that create the material? Ultimately, Phrase-work will be shared as a portal to play. Choreographed material will act as a set of coordinates that anchor an exploration of exaggeration and sensation. We’ll fall into and out of lush, decadent movement experiences.

TUES. OCT 13

9:30 AM CLASS: SARA SHELTON-MANN AT KERRY HALL

OCT 13 9:30-11:30am Kerry Hall | Practice as Performance OPEN LEVEL | REGISTER

Through dancing sweating and laughter, the body is trained to maintain a high frequency and consciously act in space. In this workshop, participants are encouraged to use their imagination and discover their individual physical orchestra while integrating different dance forms into the practice in an exploration of the freedom of choice and the trust in one’s own body. Space and geometry are also added elements to increase sensitivity and create immediate choices and choreographic momentum
